Via Transformativa: Practical Magic — Magic of Understanding Ego

By: JUBILEE! Minister Bill Harris

To fight the ego or to just passively roll over are both destructive and counterproductive. How do we step back and create the space to work practical magic with the ego? Understanding ego can be a powerful way to work practical magic with the ego. The ego can either be the walls that keep us trapped or it can be a means to awakening. The more we understand what ego is and how it functions the more we can engage it in a way that’s both creative and transformative. I’m going to put some things out here about ego and then open up the floor for discussion.

We spend most of our lives living as amnesiacs with a case of mistaken identity. So when we use the word “I” we’re usually, as Eckhart Tolle points out, referring to “me and my story” which is the “I” of our likes, dislikes, desires, fears and etc. This “I”, this self, is the ego self. The ego self is simply a conditioned, constructed self. It’s our programming. It’s the collection of our beliefs, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and actions constantly acting and interacting with each other thousands of times per second.

Via Transformativa: Practical Magic — Magic of Living from the Inside-Out

By: JUBILEE! Minister Candace Chellew-Hodge

“Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers,” wrote that desert dwelling Hebrew poet so long ago, “but their delight is in the law of the Lord.”

This morning’s reading (Psalm 1:1-3) is one of those passages of scriptures that make more conservative, traditional Christian preachers smile, because it’s their chance to talk about “siiiin …” It’s their chance to point their finger at their congregation and convict them of their shortcomings and how much they need Jeeezus to save them.

Via Transformativa: Practical Magic — Magic of Awareness

By: JUBILEE! Minister Candace Chellew-Hodge

If today’s reading from the apostle Paul (Philippians 4:4-8) could be summed up in a song title it would be “Change Your Mind!” This is the entire purpose of his message to the early Christian church and is yet more instruction on how we can invoke the magic of awareness right now by using the 90% of our lives that we live inside of ego to our advantage.

As Bill said a couple of weeks ago, one of the steps to loving our ego is to take responsibility for it. We do that by training it to stop obsessing about the evil in the world and start obsessing about everything good in the world. In short, we change our mind. If, indeed, what we think on grows, then why not train our ego to think about peace and compassion instead of war and hatred? If it’s true the ego is in charge 90% of the time, this simple change of mind can totally transform our lives!

Via Transformativa: Practical Magic — The Magic of Community

By: JUBILEE! Minister Candace Chellew-Hodge

By all rights, Bill Harris, our associate pastor at Jubilee! Circle, and I should not be friends … and not for the reasons some may think such as our difference in age, our difference in gender or our difference in sexual orientation. None of these things really matter all that much to the friendship that he and I have forged.

Instead, I believe the relationship Bill and I have developed comes solely from a very deep understanding of our two Christian scripture readings this morning.

“Beloved, let us love one another …” begins 1 John 4:7-13.
